# Bank directory

> Reference for the Venezuelan bank utility, subject to service enablement.

<Warning>This utility depends on service enablement and is not advertised as generally available. When disabled, it returns `403 endpoint_disabled`. This page preserves the reference for existing integrations.</Warning>

## Request

Requires `X-API-Key`. Optional `q` filters names case-insensitively. This is not a list of bank exchange rates.

Run these examples on your server. JavaScript and Python use the clients in the [quickstart](/en/api/quickstart#paso-2); configure `COTIZAVE_API_KEY` there.

<CodeGroup>
  ```bash curl theme={null}
  curl --fail-with-body --max-time 10 "https://api.cotizave.com/v1/banks?q=Banesco" \
    -H "X-API-Key: $COTIZAVE_API_KEY"
  ```

  ```javascript Node.js theme={null}
  import { cotizave } from './cotizave.mjs';
  const data = await cotizave('/v1/banks?q=Banesco');
  console.log(data);
  ```

  ```python Python theme={null}
  from cotizave import cotizave
  data = cotizave('/v1/banks?q=Banesco')
  print(data)
  ```
</CodeGroup>

<span id="response" />

## Response when enabled

Illustrative response: figures and dates are not current quotes.

```json theme={null}
{
  "banks": [
    {
      "code": "0134",
      "name": "Banesco",
      "type": "private"
    }
  ],
  "total": 1
}
```

`code` is a string, `name` is the bank name and `type` is `public` or `private`. In the list response, `total` counts items returned after filtering.

## Errors

`403 endpoint_disabled` when the utility is closed. Code lookup returns `400 invalid_format` for a length other than four and `404 bank_not_found` if no entry exists.

The [common errors](/en/api/errors) for authentication, quota and availability also apply. API error responses are JSON; branch on `code`, not on the text of `message`.

<span id="atribucion" />

## Attribution

The directory comes from utilities shared with normadata.io. Handler responses include `X-Data-Source: normadata.io`.
